Soul Blend Duo are two people: Glory and Darcy. Two, not four or five, and that shapes the whole evening. A duo works at human scale - no drum riser, no wall of amplifiers, no sound engineer stationed at the back. What reaches you is close to what the two of them are making, a few metres away. The residency runs Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting at 8:00pm. Five nights out of seven is unusual for live music in this city, where most venues book a different act each weekend and go quiet midweek. Here it is the same two performers across the whole stretch, so a Wednesday is not a consolation prize for having missed Saturday. That regularity is what turns a booking into a fixture. There is no listings page to check, no need to ask who is on before deciding where to eat. If it is Wednesday through Sunday and it is past eight, they are on. It also lets people build habits around it - the table taken by the same group every Thursday, the couple who walk over from the metro after work on a Friday. A residency gathers its own regulars in a way a touring act never does.

Where it happens

The music happens outdoors. The terrace sits at street level, directly in front of the restaurant, on the quiet side of Sea World - the part of the complex people walk to rather than through. From Sea World metro station it is a short walk. Behind the terrace, the ground floor holds the bar and the dining room, so the room and the open air work as one space on music nights: glass front, tables inside, tables out. There is a second room upstairs, and it is a proper one rather than an overflow. The second floor has its own stage, a red curtain, a backline left standing, its own bar, and high tables arranged facing the stage. It is a separate room with a separate purpose, which is why the terrace can stay a terrace and the upstairs can be a show room. That second-floor room is also where Shenzhen's only regular stand-up open mic runs on Sundays with TakeOut Comedy, and that evening has a page of its own. Music you can talk over

Most live music forces a choice: hear the act, or talk to the person across the table. Rooms are built to project, volume climbs to fill them, and by the second set conversation has become a run of shouted half-sentences. An open terrace behaves differently. Sound leaves instead of bouncing back off walls and a ceiling, so nothing accumulates and there is no point at which the room starts competing with itself. There is also less to push in the first place: the source is small to begin with. The result is music you sit inside rather than under. That changes what the evening is for. You can bring people who came to catch up and people who came to listen, and neither is sacrificed to the other. A table can run three hours. Someone can take a phone call without walking out to the street. You can sit down at eight and still be talking at eleven. It changes who it suits, too: a dinner that turns into drinks, friends who see each other twice a year, a first evening out with someone you are still getting to know. The music gives the evening its shape without taking the room away from you.
